Can we shorten the dev time by using code from Gullery?

We have to make sure that whatever JS library we use for the gallery that it also functions when JS is disabled.

Both piroBox and LightBox function even with JS disabled (though of course all the fancy effects are lost)

As for size, piroBox is definitely the smaller of the two; at just 85KiB total (all the JS libraries it uses) it is about two times smaller than LightBox.

Of course the ideal solution would be to find a way of using just Scriptaculous and Prototype to achieve the same effect.

    Here's another option: Lightview http://www.nickstakenburg.com/pr...

Lightview only requires Prototype and Scriptaculous.

Another candidate would be the JQuery based ThickBox: http://jquery.com/demo/thickbox/

I can't seem to find any specific rails solutions for this, out side of RedBox (http://www.craigambrose.com/proj..., which doesn't degrade well.

It seems that I should read things with more care: Lightbox also only needs just Scriptaculous and Prototype, in addition to lightbox.js.

Maybe we should go with lightbox? Lightbox.js is only about 18kb, not a whole lot more (especially when you remember that you will also be loading pictures)

Should the gallery thumbnails be bigger? At the moment we get a lot of empty space on the page...

Maybe up the size to 150 - 200px?

I just tried 150px and it seems too big. Even 120px seems a bit too big. 100px seems to be a very common thumbnail size.

100px looks too small; it leaves too muxh space between the thumbnails.

I tried 150px in firebug, it looked pretty good,
